In 1998, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf received these cherry trees as a gift from Japan. Although chilly on my visit, the trees were in full bloom. In the background is a statue of Gustavus Adolphus, the King of Sweden from 1611 – 1632.

The cherry blossoms are bright pink, soft and delicate looking, and their very existence betrays the mostly overcast sky and cold temperatures. They contrast dramatically with the statue of the old King.
