Red-eye flights to Europe can be brutal. Nevertheless, there is something very special and endlessly exciting about sliding open the window shade after flying all night to another part of the world and getting your first glimpse of another country.

This is that first-glimpse landing at Flughafen Frankfurt am Main on an overnight Lufthansa flight from Chicago…the Waldstadion (known then as Comerzbank Arena) is in the foreground, with another Lufthansa landing jet above it.

Even though this was taken from a 747 traveling hundreds of miles an hour, the predominant feeling I get from this photo is sense of calm. The colors, cool tones, and the open spaces (the stadium, the park around it, and the sky) offer a sense of peace.
