Strolling aimlessly around cities and taking photographs might be my favorite travel activity. In Amsterdam, there is this distinct change in energy between the day when the canals and streets are busy with tourists and residents alike and the evening when things dramatically slow down and calm largely sets over most of the city. Walking through the city then, certain places call out to you and act as a beacon drawing you in, like Café 't Smalle here– a traditional Dutch brown café.

I love the detail in this photo starting with the railing along the canal. Its paint has been chipped away by the endless stream of bicycles being chained up to it, the lights highlighting the café, and the nearby residents' windows open so you can see in…a Dutch tradition practically.
